Aeration and Overseeding
Is your lawn looking sparse this summer? A tad bald in some areas? Landscapes in the south act as gathering spaces for family, especially those with pets or children enjoying the outdoors; alternatively, you might have had recent construction or have regular maintenance and mowing. Either way, your lawn is likely suffering from compacted soil due to foot traffic or another probable culprit, our Georgia red clay. All to say, it's likely time for annual aeration and overseeding to refresh your lawn.
Core aeration and overseeding are essential for proper turf care and growth, especially in Georgia. Unfortunately, our infamous red clay hinders air exchange, water flow, and nutrient absorption - leading to a lackluster lawn full of patchy places.
How Does it Work
Core aeration systematically removes small plugs of soil to reduce compaction and opens up the turf root systems to introduce proper nutrients, water, and air. Overseeding drops seeds into the tiny grooves left behind, ensuring seed-to-soil contact and yielding new growth. Your lawn will be flaunting a fuller, thicker appearance in six to eight weeks. For enhanced results, topdressing can be used with aeration and overseeding to improve nutrient absorption and drought tolerance while reducing future compaction.
Aesthetics aside, your lawn will also benefit from the following:
- Higher resistance to disease
- Increased drought tolerance
- Reduced soil compaction
- Improved water and airflow
- Less insect and disease activity
- New, deeper root systems
- Fuller, thicker lawn
Late summer/early fall is a great time to consider servicing your lawn as the soil is still warm, the weeds are weakening, and the cooler temperatures reduce heat stress. You don't have to settle for a patchwork lawn—instead, investment in core aeration and overseeding to improve turf health, density, and appearance.
