Best Pruning Techniques for Boxwoods

Heirloom Tree and Garden’s Director of Horticulture, Kevin Stone, takes us through the landscape to discuss the best pruning practices for boxwoods.

From where to snip and how much, Kevin explains how to thin the boxwood canopy to allow for air circulation and light absorption, improve boxwood pest and disease tolerance, and encourage interior growth of the plant to ensure a full, lush canopy.

“We’re going to talk about how to properly thin and open up the canopy for air and light circulation to help reduce some diseases on our boxwoods.” Stone said. “(Pruning) should be done annually, some time between November to January… If this is done annually, you’ll reduce your disease chances probably about 50-60%.”
