Pruning Boxwoods with Kevin

Heirloom Tree and Garden's Director of Horticulture, Kevin Stone, takes us through the landscape to discuss the best pruning practices for boxwoods. Thinning dense clusters in the boxwood canopy allow air circulation and light absorption within the plant. Opening up pockets in the canopy improve boxwood health, making them less susceptible to pests and diseases. If done correctly, annual pruning can enhance pest and disease resistance by upwards of 50-60%. Additionally, proper pruning encourages interior growth of the plant to ensure a full, lush canopy. Stimulating growth also better prepares the plant for the dormant season and the possibility of cold weather/ice damage to the exterior. Check out the video below to better understand the best techniques for pruning boxwoods in your landscape!
